The Japanese writing system is the most complicated among the known languages of the world. The combined use of the kanji chinese characters, hiragana and katakana syllabaries and latin script (romaji) has its logic, but at the same time it offers possibilities of specific and in many instances also creative applications. The Japanese script also poses a considerable challenfe for all students of the Japanese language. On March 6, Prof. Yasutoshi Hanada of Tokyo International University gave a talk to our students about the pifalls of the Japanese writing system.
